All-Black Camera Bags & Gear: Peak Design vs Everyone
By ALLBLACKEDOUT
Peak Design didn't just make camera bags. They made camera bags that don't look like camera bags.
If you carry camera gear daily, you know the problem: most camera bags scream "I have $5,000 of equipment in here." Peak Design bags look like normal backpacks — until you open them.
We've used Peak Design gear for years. Here's what's actually worth buying, what's overkill, and where the competition makes sense.
The Everyday Line: Daily Drivers
Everyday Backpack 20L vs 30L
The 20L is the sweet spot for most people. It holds a mirrorless body, 2-3 lenses, a 13" laptop, and daily essentials. The FlexFold dividers reconfigure in seconds.
The 30L adds space for bigger bodies (Sony A7 series, Canon R5) and longer lenses (70-200). If you regularly carry 4+ lenses, go 30L. Otherwise, the 20L carries better.

Our take: The 20L is the better daily bag. The 30L is the better travel bag. Most people should start with 20L.Everyday Sling 3L vs 6L vs 10L
The 3L fits a small mirrorless body + one prime lens. Think Ricoh GR III, Fujifilm X100VI, or Leica Q3 with nothing else.
The 6L is the one. It fits a body + lens + phone + wallet + keys. It's the sling you'll actually carry every day.
The 10L is for people who want a sling but actually need a messenger bag. It fits a body + 2 lenses + iPad + daily carry.

Everyday Messenger 13L
The messenger that started it all. The V3 is slimmer than previous versions, with better weatherproofing and the new MagLatch closure.
If you commute with a laptop + camera + daily stuff, this is the move. The shoulder strap is the most comfortable in any messenger bag we've tested.

The Travel Line: One-Bag Travel
Travel Backpack 45L
The bag that killed the suitcase. The Travel Backpack 45L opens flat like a suitcase, compresses to 35L for carry-on, and expands to 45L when you need it.
The internal dividers turn it into a camera bag + travel bag in one. Pack camera gear in the bottom, clothes on top, and you're set for a week.

Compresses to 35L for airlines with strict carry-on limits. The side zips give you quick access without opening the whole bag.Travel DuffelPack 45-65L
If you want more capacity and don't need camera organization, the DuffelPack converts between duffel and backpack modes.
65L expanded is genuinely massive. We've used it for two-week trips with camera gear, laptop, and still had room.

The Accessories: Worth Every Dollar
Tech Pouch
The Tech Pouch is the single best organizer we've ever used. It holds chargers, cables, adapters, SD cards, and small electronics in a way that makes them actually accessible.
The origami-style internal dividers create pockets that compress flat when empty. It goes from "stuffed with gear" to "paper thin" in seconds.

Wash Pouch
Not camera-related, but if you're buying Peak Design bags, get the Wash Pouch too. It hangs open flat, has a magnetic toothbrush pocket, and fits everything you need for a week.

The Competition
Thule EnRoute
Thule makes solid bags at lower prices. The EnRoute 23L is a good everyday backpack with decent camera protection — if you add a camera cube.
But: no FlexFold dividers, no Capture Clip compatibility, and the build quality is a step below Peak Design. You get what you pay for.
Matador Camera Base Layer
Matador's Camera Base Layer is a minimalist camera insert that turns any bag into a camera bag. Interesting concept, limited execution. It works for one body + one lens, but the protection is minimal.
Wandrd Prvke
The closest competitor to Peak Design. The Prvke 31L is well-built with good camera organization. The rolltop design gives flexible capacity.
Our take: if Peak Design didn't exist, we'd carry Wandrd. But Peak Design does exist.
